HC order on compensate to United Hospital fire victim families stayed

DHAKA, July 21, 2020 (BSS) – The Chamber Judge court of the Appellate Division today stayed till August 16 the High Court order that had directed to the United Hospital authorities to give Taka 30 lakh each of the families of four victims, who were killed in a devastating fire on the hospital premises on May 27.

Justice Md Nuruzzaman of Appellate Division Chamber Judge court passed the order after holding a hearing on a plea filed by the hospital authorities.

Barrister Rokon Uddin Mahmud, Barrister Mostafizur Rahman Khan moved the plea for the hospital, while Barrister Hasan MS Azim, Barrister Muntasir Uddin Ahmed, Barrister Anik R Haque and Advocate Niaz Mohammad Mahboob argued for the writ filed for compensating the victim families.

On July 15, the High Court had ordered the United Hospital authorities to give Taka 30 lakh each of families of four victims, who were killed in a devastating fire that engulfed the hospital’s makeshift corona unit on May 27, within 15 days.

Vernon Anthony Paul, Riyajul Alam, Khodeja Begum, Md Monir Hossain and Md Mahbub were burnt to death in the fire as it engulfed the makeshift corona isolation unit raised on the premises of the hospital on May 27.

Of the five, the family of Md Monir Hossain had reached an amicable settlement with the hospital and took Taka 20 lakh as compensation, making the High Court to leave it out in its order.
