India witnesses dwindling COVID-19 fatality rate: government

NEW DELHI, July 20, 2020 (BSS) – India today reported a “progressive” decline of its COVID-19 fatality rate with its union health ministry overnight saying the case fatality rate (CFR) fell below 2.5 percent for the first time, though the country emerged as one of the worst coronavirus pandemic victim.

“India (now) has emerged as one of the world’s lowest (COVID-19) Case Fatality Rate with 2.46%,” said an official statement quoting the country’s health ministry.

According to the statement India’s COVID-19 case fatality rate declined from 3.2 percent around May 12 to 2.82 percent around June 1 while it declined further to 2.72 percent on July 10 and to 2.49 per cent at present.

It attributed the development particularly to efficient clinical management of hospitalised cases through “focused efforts” of the Centre and the state and UT governments.

“Effective clinical management of the moderate and severe cases through a well executed Standard of Care protocol has ensured high rate of recovery among the COVID patients,” the statement read.

The ministry simultaneously reported India’s biggest one-day jump in cases, 40,425, taking the country’s COVID-19 tally to over 1.1 million while the number of deaths climbed to 27,497, up 681 since Sunday morning.

The official statement came while John Hopkins University updated its daily pandemic statistics saying in India, there have been 1,118,206 confirmed cases and 27,497 deaths, with 700,087 people recovered from the virus.

According to the watchdog’s latest updates today 14,508,892 cases have been detected worldwide, with 606,206 deaths and 8,134,747 people recovered as infections were reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.

The health ministry said number of recovered COVID-19 patients exceeds India’s active caseload by 3,04,043 with 6.77 lakh people having recuperated from the disease so far.

Maharashtra has registered the highest number of cases, followed by Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

Maharashtra registered its highest-ever single-day surge in new cases till Sunday night, at 9,518, taking the state’s total tally to 3,10,455.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday talked to the chief ministers of seven worst COVID-19 affected states — Bihar, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand – through video conferencing to review the situation.

With the fresh spike of coronavirus, Indian Health Minister Harsh Vardhan underlined the need for administer plasma therapy to contain the disease.

“We need more of these plasma warriors to help fight the pandemic untill a definitive treatment or vaccine is developed,” he said last night.
