Explosion kills, wounds 73 on Syrian-Turkish border: monitor

DAMASCUS, July 20, 2020 (BSS/XINHUA) – An explosion that rocked the Syrian-Turkish border a day earlier killed and wounded 73 people, a war monitor reported on Monday.

Eight people were killed and more than 65 others wounded when a car bomb was detonated on Sunday near the Bab al-Salameh border crossing between Syria and Turkey in Syria’s northern province of Aleppo, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The death toll could likely rise due to the number of critically wounded people, said the UK-based watchdog group.

The targeted area is controlled by the Turkish forces and Turkey-backed rebels.

The Observatory said the explosion comes days after the Turkish forces and allied Syrian opposition rebels launched a campaign against the Islamic State (IS) sleeper cells in areas controlled by Turkey in northern Syria.
