COVID-19 cases exceed 4,900 in Rangpur division

RANGPUR, July 20, 2020 (BSS) – The number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases exceeded the 4,900 mark as 107 new patients were reported after testing 376 collected samples on Sunday at the two COVID-19 Laboratories in Rangpur division.

“The total number of COVID-19 cases now stands at 4,908 in all eight districts of the division,” Focal Person of COVID-19 and Assistant Director (Health) for Rangpur division Dr. ZA Siddiqui told BSS today. The district-wise break up of the total 4,908 infected patients stands at 1,470 in Rangpur, 211 in Panchagarh, 586 in Nilphamari, 263 in Lalmonirhat, 335 in Kurigram, 285 in Thakurgaon, 1,220 in Dinajpur and 538 Gaibandha of the division.

Despite an increasing trend in the number of COVID-19 cases in recent weeks, the number of recovered patients continues increasing daily and rose to 3,228 with the healing of 66 more people on Sunday in the division.

“Currently, the rate of recovery of the coronavirus infected patients stands at 67.55 percent in Rangpur division which is higher than the recovery arte at the national level,” Dr. Siddiqui said.

The 3,228 recovered COVID-19 patients include 1,032 of Rangpur, 144 of Panchagarh, 458 of Nilphamari, 172 of Lalmonirhat, 183 of Kurigram, 214 of Thakurgaon, 727 of Dinajpur and 298 of Gaibandha districts.

Meanwhile, the total number of fatalities rose to 83 in the division as two more deaths with one each from Thakurgaon and Gaibandha districts, reported on Sunday in the division.

Among the 83 deceased people, 26 died in Rangpur, 23 in Dinajpur, 11 in Gaibandha, nine in Nilphamari, five in Kurigram, four in Panchagarh, three in Thakurgaon and two in Lalmonirhat districts of the division.

“The average casualty rate among all 4,908 COVID-19 patients now stands at around 1.69 percent in the division,” Dr. Siddiqui added.

Among the total 4,908 COVID-19 patients, 168 are undergoing treatments at isolation units of different hospitals after release of 3,228 recovered patients and 83 deaths while 1,429 remaining in home isolations in the division.

During the last 24 hours till 8 am today, 411 people were put in quarantine at home or institutions and 561 others released in the division.

A total of 56,492 people of the division were put in quarantines, and of them, 50,061 released and 6,431 are currently remaining in home or institutional quarantines since the beginning.

Talking to BSS, Divisional Director (Health) Dr. Amin Ahmed Khan said a total of 35,585 collected samples of Rangpur division till Sunday night, and of them, 4,908 were found COVID-19 positive with an infection rate of around 13.79 percent.

“After receiving a total of 1,74,313 personal protection equipment sine the beginning, we have distributed 1,04,979 pieces among the health service providers with 69,334 pieces of the same are remaining in stock in the division,” Dr. Khan added. Divisional Commissioner KM Tariqul Islam said all authorities concerned, members of police, Bangladesh Army, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-13 and others are working in a coordinated manner to face the COVID-19 situation in the division.

“Besides, hectic efforts are on to inspire the common people both in rural and urban areas in abiding by health directives to prevent community transmission of COVID-19 both in the division,” Islam said.
