1 more UP chairman, 3 members suspended over relief scam
DHAKA, July 16, 2020 (BSS) – The Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry has suspended 1 more Union Parishad (UP) chairmen and three members
for their alleged irregularities in cash aid disbursement and relief distribution among destitute people amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The Local Government Division (LGD) of the ministry today issued separate notifications in this regard.
A total of 111 public representatives, including 36 UP Chairmen, 69 UP members, one Zila Parishad member, 4 Municipality councilors and one Upazila Vice-Chairman have been suspended over the relief scam, said a press release.
The temporarily suspended official is – Md Siraj Uddin Mandal, chairman of number 2 Talkhari union parishad of Shalikha upazila of Magura district.
He was dismissed for allegedly storing VGD card rice without distributing it among the beneficiaries.
The temporarily suspended UP members were – Md Shahajan Sheikh, also acting chairman of Perli Union Parishad no-11 of Kalia Upazila under Narail district, Md Rakit Sheikh of Ward no. 6 of Baisona union Parishad of Kalia Upazila of the same district and Rashida Khatun of wards 7, 8 and 9 from the reserved women’s seat of no-12 Achim Patuli union under Fulbaria upazila of Mymensingh district.
Rashida Khatun was suspended as she was found guilty of using bamboo instead of rod in the construction of U-drain under Local Governance Support Project-3.
Besides, separate showcase notices were served on them asking to send their
replies to the Local Government Division through respective deputy
commissioners (DCs) within 10 working days from the date of receiving
notices, explaining why they should not be removed permanently from their
posts.
