LGRD minister calls for countrywide online cattle sales

DHAKA, July 13, 2020 (BSS) – As the country has been witnessing the outbreak of novel coronavirus (Covid-19) since March this year, the government took a move to promote online cattle sales ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha, one of the biggest religious festivals of the Muslims, to check the spread of the deadly virus.

“Eid-ul-Azha is being celebrated this time in a very unusual phenomenon due to Covid-19 outbreak. We should go for online cattle (sacrificial animals) sales-purchase to avoid gatherings at cattle markets,” LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Md Tazul Islam told journalists at his secretariat office here.

The minister mentioned that several days ago he inaugurated a digital cattle haat under the supervision of the Dhaka North City Corporations and he bought a cow using the platform.

For those who will be unable to sale or buy cattle on online platforms, markets could be set up in a limited scale at the places where there will be lesser chance of public fathering, he said adding that health guidelines and social or physical distancing must be maintained to this end, he added.

He said directives have been given to all concerned government bodies for proper management of cattle markets considering the reality of respective areas including district and upazila levels across the country.
