14 killed, 8 missing as heavy rainstorm lashes China’s Sichuan

CHENGDU, July 1, 2020 (BSS/XINHUA) – A heavy rainstorm had left 14 people dead and eight others missing as of 11 p.m. Tuesday in the county of Mianning in southwest China’s Sichuan Province, local government sources said Wednesday.

Previous reports put the number of dead and missing at 12 and 10, respectively.

Two missing people have been found and confirmed dead, according to the information office of the Mianning county government.

Torrential rains hit the county on June 26. Currently, 5,660 people are in temporary settlements in Yihai Township and Gaoyang sub-district in the county, according to the office.

Direct economic loss caused by the rainstorm amounted to 738 million yuan (about 104 million U.S. dollars), the office said.
Rescue work is continuing.
