DMP commissioner pays tribute to Holey Artisan attack victims

DHAKA, July 1, 2020 (BSS) – Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mohammad Shafiqul Islam today paid tributes to the victims of militant attack on Holey Artisan Bakery in the city’s Gulshan area.

On the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the militant attack, the DMP commissioner along with other senior officials paid homage to the memory of the victims by placing wreaths on the restaurant premises in the morning.

Besides, Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun and leaders of Bangladesh Police Service Association paid their tributes, according to a DMP release.

Diplomatic Security and Protection Division and Gulshan Thana Community Policing also paid tributes to the Holey Artisan attack victims.

On July 1, 2016, militants carried out a horrific attack on the Holey Artisan Bakery at Gulshan. Twenty-two innocent people including two DMP officers and 17 foreign nationals were killed during the attack.

Two fearless DMP officers — Senior Assistant Police Commissioner Md Rabiul Karim and Officer-In-Charge of Banani Police Station Md Salah Uddin — Khan were killed while they tried to thwart the terrorist attack.

The DMP commissioner also inaugurated a sculpture named ‘Dweepta Shapath’ in front of old Gulshan Police Station on July 1, 2018 to commemorate those killed in the terrorist attack on Holey Artisan Bakery.

A group of five terrorists carried out the brutal attack on the Holey Artisan Restaurant at Road no-79, Gulshan on July 1, 2016 at around 8:45 pm. On that day, a total of 22 locals and foreigners were killed in the attack inside the restaurant.

Each of them was hacked, wounded or shot dead by the terrorists. Of them, nine Italians, seven Japanese, one Indian and three Bangladeshis were killed.

After the incident, members of the army conducted the commando operation called ‘Thunderbolt’ and rescued several people including foreigners alive from the spot.

All the five terrorists who carried out the militant attack were killed in the commando operation. They were identified as Mir Sameh Mobasher, Rohan Ibne Imtiaz alias Mamun, Nibraj Islam, Khairul Islam Payel and Shafiqul Islam Uzzal.
