Drive to continue until curbing narcotics peddling: Home Minister

DHAKA, June 25, 2018 (BSS) – Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said today the
nationwide ongoing crackdown would be continued until and unless bringing the
illegal drugs trading under control.

“The ongoing drive against narcotics would be continued until the
narcotics peddling to be brought under control,” he told a press conference
arranged marking anti-narcotics day at the ministry’s conference room here.

“We firmly believed to make the country free from drugs soon with
performing the duties vested upon us accordingly and sincerely,” he said.

Talking about outcome of the ongoing anti-narcotics drives, the minister
said, “As many as 22,000 people have so far been arrested in the recent
drives relating to various drug related offences.”

Replying to a query about the incidents of shootouts during anti-narcotics
drives, he said, “Drug peddlers have been using firearms causing the
incidents of gunfights. The law enforcers have sometimes opened fire to save
their lives.”

“The law enforcers have been conducting the drives upon a list prepared by
five intelligence agencies,” he informed. Asked about the people’s support
for the ongoing drive, Asaduzzaman said, “We have got huge response from the
people of every strata of lives as they want immediate relieve from the drug
menace.”
