SC extends stay on suspended jailer Sohel Rana’s bail

DHAKA, June 30, 2020 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today extended stay for 16 more weeks on a High Court order that granted bail to suspended jailer Sohel Rana Biswas in a case lodged under money-laundering prevention act.

Justice Md Nuruzzaman of Appellate Division Chamber Judge Court passed the order today.

Earlier on June 23, the Appellate Division had stayed Rana’s bail order till June 30. On June 16, it granted conditional bail to the suspended jailer in the case.

A High Court virtual bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder had granted the disgraced jailer’s bail till filing of police report in the case and on condition of surrendering his passport.

Police on October 27, 2018, arrested Rana, then jailer of Chattogram Prison, from Mymensingh- bound Bijoy Express train and recovered Taka 44.43 lakh in cash, FDR documents of Taka 2.5 crore, three bank cheques for Taka 1.30 crore, five cheque books, and 12 bottles of phensedyl from his possession.

Police later filed one case under money-laundering prevention act and another under anti-narcotics act with Bhairab Railway Police Station.
