Flood situation worsening in Brahmaputra, Meghna basins

DHAKA, June 28, 2020 (BSS) – The flood situation continued to deteriorate in the northern Brahmaputra and eastern and northeastern Meghna basins due to further sharp rise in water levels of major rivers inundating vast low-lying areas of six northern districts in the Brahmaputra basin and three eastern and northeastern districts on the Meghna basin during the last 24 hours till at 9 am today.

Water levels are flowing above danger marks at 14 points – 10 in Brahmaputra and four in Meghna basin- till 9am today as water levels at 86 river stations out of total 101, monitored by FFWC, have marked rise while 13 stations recorded fall and two others remain steady.

Levels of water of all major rivers are in rising trend and it is likely to continue in the next three days, said a bulletin of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) of BWDB.

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) officials said the major rivers in Brahmaputra basin were flowing above their respective danger marks (DM) at 10 points following continuous onrush of huge water amid torrential rains from the upper catchment areas in India.

The Brahmaputra was flowing 53cm above its DM at Noonkhawa and 66cm at Chilmari and Dharla by 65cm at Kurigram points in Kurigram, Teesta by 15cm above the DM at Dalia in Nilphamari and Ghaghot by 35cm at Gaibandha points at 9 am.

Besides, the Jamuna was flowing 59cm above the DM at Fulchhari in Gaibandha, 52cm at Bahadurabad in Jamalpur, 29cm at Sariakandi in Bogura, 30cm at Kazipur and 9cm at Sirajganj points in Sirajganj districts at 9 am today.

According to FFWC, the recorded rainfalls during the past 24 hours till 9am were 572 millimeter at Cherrapunji, 69mm at Darjeeling and 88mm at Shillong points of the northwestern Indian states in the upstream.

The recorded rainfalls during the past 24 hours till 9am were 360 mm at Larergar, 175mm at Lalakhal, 240mm at Maheshkhola, 130mm at Chhatak, 213mm at Sunamganj and 91 mm at Jariyangail stations in the downstream.

As the heavy rainfall continues in the upper catchment areas, water levels of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna river system may continue to rise further during the next 72 hours to inundate more low-lying areas in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogura, Sirajganj Jamalpur and Tangail districts resulting in short-medium duration flooding in the low lying areas.

In Meghna or Surma-Kushiyara basin, water levels are flowing above danger marks at four points including Kanaighat point in Surma river (61 cm), Sunamganj point in Kushiyara (70 cm), Larergar in Jadukata (90cm) and Kalmakanda in Someswari river (2cm) till 9am today.

A total of 18 upazilas in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts have been inundated and several lakh people were marooned in the flood.

Water levels of Padma on Ganges or Padma basin, among the three major river basins of the country, may cross the danger marks at Goalundo point in the next 24 hours till 9am tomorrow (Monday).
