RAJSHAHI, June 27, 2020 (BSS) – Collective efforts of all quarters including law-enforcing agencies is very important to combat drug abuse and illicit trafficking to protect people and the young generation in particular.
Around 80 percent of the drug addicts are of the age group of 15 to 30 in the country. So, there is no alternative to adopt measures against drug abuse and its illicit trafficking.
Professionals, academics, development activists and other leaders of influence came up with the observations while addressing a seminar on the issue virtually in Rajshahi Friday amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Light House Consortium and Counter International jointly organized the seminar in association with USAID and UKAID to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking-2020 discussing ways and means on how to free the city from the curse of abusing drugs. Professor Ilias Hossain from the Department of Economics in Rajshahi University (RU) presented the keynote paper in the seminar moderated by Chief Executive of Light House Harun-Or-Rashid.
Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, Prof Pronab Kumar Panday and Prof Shatil Siraj from RU, Additional Director of the Department of Narcotics Control Zafrullah Kazal, Union Parishad Chairman Isahaque Ali and development activists Abul Bashar, Rowshan Ara and Subrata Kumar Paul joined the discussion from their respective ending points.
Prof Ilias Hossain said the present government has taken zero tolerance policy against the drug and its illicit trafficking and a large section of drug traders has already been brought under the law.
So, forging social resistance has become indispensable to supplement the government efforts of uprooting crime as it’s being adjudged as a grave concern in the society.
He laid emphasis on creating awareness among the youth community about the harmful consequences of drugs and said family can play a vital role in this regard as strong family bondage helps keep children away from drug abuse.
Drugs-abuse-free society must be built at any cost to protect people particularly the young generation from deadly aggression of the drugs.
