Cricketer Mushfiq provides aid to 160 JU shopkeepers

SAVAR, June 22, 2020 (BSS) – Bangladesh wicket-keeper batsman and former student of History department at Jahangirnagar University (JU) Mushfiqur Rahim stood beside 160 poor shopkeepers of the university with food aid on Sunday.

Mushfiqur Rahim distributed the food for at least 15 days among the JU shopkeepers as each person get a packet contains 15 kg of rice along with pulses, oil, salt, onion, garlic, potatoes and soap.

Musfiqur came to know about the financial hardship of shopkeepers for prolonged closure of their outlets as university has been remained shut due to COVID-19 pandemic. After being known about their sufferings by his faculty teacher Professor Dr. ATM Atiqur Rahman, Musfiqur promptly responded by approaching towards them with food aid.

Professor Dr. ATM Atiqur Rahman praised Mushfiqur Rahim’s commitment to humanity and wished a brighter future of him while distributing aid at the university’s main gate area.

“Due to the long closure of the campus, those shopkeepers have fallen into great trouble. The initiative taken by Musfiq might minimize their suffering during the outbreak of coronavirus,” said Dr. Atiqur.

Mushfiq reportedly showed his generosity providing relief to helpless people during the countrywide lockdown began in March. He drew newspaper’s headlines by donating half of his salary. He handed over 200 PPEs and hand sanitizers among health workers of Bogra Medical College in his home district. Earlier, he provided financial assistance to the needy people and 30 net bowlers of the cricket board. Apart from this, Mushfiqur, considered as the most dependable batsman of the country, had put his historic bat, which he used to score Bangladesh’s maiden Test century, for auction to raise fund for Covid-19 affected people in Bangladesh. The bat was sold at $20,000 (Tk. 17 lakh approximately).
