Private hospitals playing important role in treatments of COVID-19 patients: Maleque

DHAKA, June 20, 2020 (BSS) – Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque today said private hospitals are playing an important role in providing healthcare facilities for COVID-19 patients in the country.

Alongside the government hospitals, private hospitals are extending their healthcare services to the COVID-19 patients, he told a function here, an official release said.

Joynal Abedin Shikder Women Medical College Hospital’s Gulshan branch with 50 beds has been dedicated for COVID-19 patients to supplement the efforts of expanding healthcare facilities to curb the spread of the fatal disease.

The health minister formally inaugurated the hospital through video conference from his residence.

The hospital has been included as a latest one in the list of dedicated hospitals in the city.

Directorate General of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Prof Abul Kalam Azad, health officials and physicians, among others, were present at the function with Director of the hospital Parvin Haque Shikder, MP, in the chair.

Joynal Abedin Shikder Women Medical College Hospital is equipped with modern facilities including ICUs and CPUs for treatment of coronavirus patients. A PCR Lab will be set at the hospital for testing samples of suspected COVID-19 people.

There are 61 PCR labs in the country, he said, adding the government is involving private sector to widen testing facilities to halt the spread of the deadly virus.

The DGHS sources said as maximum number of coronavirus positive cases have been reported in Dhaka and Narayanganj cities, the government has prepared dedicated COVID-19 hospitals for providing healthcare services to the virus-infected patients.

These hospitals are – Kurmitola General Hospital, Kuwait Maitree Hospital, Mohanagar General Hospital, Railway General Hospital in Kamalapur, Infectious Disease Hospital, Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, Sheikh Russel Gastro Liver Institute and Hospital, Regent Hospital in Uttra, Regent Hospital in Mirpur, Sajeda Foundation in Narayanganj, Rajarbag Police Hospital, Lalkuthi Hosputal Mirpur, Dhaka Medical College Hospital (burn unit), Mugda Medical College hospital, Shahid Tajuddin Medical College Hospitaul in Gazipur, the Holy Family Red Crescent Hospital and Anwar Khan Modern Hospital.

Besides, a 2,000 beds capacity hospital also has been prepared for COVID-19 patients at the Bashundhara Convention Centre in the city.
