Strike of physicians called-off in Khulna

KHULNA, June 18, 2020 (BSS) – Bangladesh Medical Association called off indefinite strike for next 72 hours from today noon in Khulna.

BMA Khulna unit General Secretary Dr Mehedi Newaz announced the decision at the press conference held at Shaheed Journalist Humayun Kabir Balu auditorium at Khulna Press Club.

Newaz also the Vice-Principal of Khulna Medical College (KMC) demanded immediate arrest of other killers and withdrawal of Asalam Bahar Bulbul, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khulna Sadar Police Station.

He also demanded capital punishment for the killers through trial by Speedy Trial Tribunal and for taking adequate security measures and safe working environment place for physicians across the country.

BMA Khulna unit President Dr Sheikh Baharul Alam, Divisional Director (Health) Rashida Sultana, Civil Surgeon Dr Sujat Ahmad, among others, spoke at the conference.

Earlier, Khulna BMA called indefinite strike yesterday evening after holding a meeting in protest of killing Dr Rakib.

Meanwhile, Police arrested five criminals including prime suspect allegedly killing of Khulna physician Dr Mohammad Rakib Khan in last 24 hours, so far, from Tongi of Gazipur and Rupsha of Khulna.

The arrested are prime FIR accused Zamir and Abul Ali, Golam Mostofa, Khadiza and Abdur Rahim. Of them, Police arrested Abdur Rahim yesterday afternoon in the city while the other four rounded up last night, said Officer-in-Charge of Khulna Sadar Police Station Aslam Bahar Bulbul.

“We arrested three FIR name accused out of four and two unnamed accused from Tongi upazila of Gazipur and Rupsha upazila of Khulna after a hectic drives,” he said.

Drives is on to nab the other criminals, he said, adding that arrestees Abul Ali, Zameer, Khadiza and Golam Mostofa are the husband, brother, sister-in-law and uncle respectively of deceased Sheuly Begum.

A physician Mohammad Abdur Rakib Khan, 59, Managing Director of Raisa Clinic, a private hospital and also Principal of Medical Assistant Training School (MATS) in Bagerhat, who was beaten up allegedly by relatives of a patient over her death succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday evening on way to Dhaka.

Younger brother of the deceased Mohammad Saiful Islam, a Lecturer of City’s Government Model High School and College, filed a case with Khulna Sadar Police Station accusing four named and some other unnamed criminals including relatives of the dead pregnant patient.

Quoting FIR, OC said, the complainant Saiful alleged that his elder brother Dr Rakib also a gynecological surgeon came under attack by some relatives of an expecting mother who died on Sunday (June 14) night after giving birth to a child following caesarean operation in his clinic.

On June 14, Sheuly Begum, an expecting mother was admitted to the clinic and operated upon by the doctor Khan died in an ambulance near Rupsa Bridge after few hours of the delivery on way to Dhaka for better treatment as her condition was deteriorating.

A day after the death of the patient, the relatives of the dead patient phoned the doctor for another caesarean operation and the attackers swopped on him at his clinic chamber, according to FIR.
