10 killed, 16 injured in deadly collision between 2 vehicles in India

NEW DELHI, June 17, 2020 (BSS/XINHUA) – At least 10 people were killed and 16 others injured, some of them critically, on Wednesday after a lorry collided head-on with a tractor in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, police said.

The accident took place at Vedadri village, Jaggayyapeta mandal in Krishna district, about 69 km east of Amaravati, the main city of Andhra Pradesh.

“Today in a tragic road accident here a lorry collided with a tractor killing 10 people and injuring 16 others,” a police official posted in Krishna district said. “Seven people were killed on the spot, while as three others succumbed inside hospital. The impact of the collision was so severe that several people were thrown off the tractor trolley.”

According to police, the victims were inside the tractor trolley.

“There were 26 devotees, including children, inside the trolley. All of them were hailing from Khammam district in adjacent Telangana,” the official said. “The devotees were returning from Lakshmi Narasimha temple in Vedadri.”

The injured were sent to Jaggayyapeta government hospital.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao expressed shock over the accident.

“The chief minister conveyed condolences to members of the bereaved families. He wished speedy recovery for those injured in the accident. The chief minister has instructed the officials to extend all the necessary support and help to the family members of those who died and to the injured persons,” read a statement from the chief minister’s office.

Police have registered a case to ascertain the reason behind the collision.

Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
