Physician beaten to death in Khulna

KHULNA, June 17, 2020 (BSS) – A physician who was beaten up allegedly by relatives of a patient over her death succumbed to his injuries yesterday evening on way to Dhaka.

The deceased was identified as Dr Mohammad Abdur Rakib Khan, 59, Managing Director of Raisa Clinic, a private hospital and also Principal of Medical Assistant Training School (MATS) in Bagerhat.

Younger brother of the deceased Mohammad Saiful Islam, a Lecturer of City’s Government Model High School and College, alleged that his elder brother Dr Rakib also a gynecological surgeon came under attack by some relatives of an expecting mother who died on Sunday (June 14) night after giving birth to a child following caesarean operation in his clinic .

According to footage of the close circuit camera television of the clinic showed patient Sheuly’s relatives Kuddus, Arif, Sabur and some other people attacked on my brother at around 8:50 pm on Monday and attackers severely beat him up and hit on his head by the sticks that resulted in serious head injury “ said Saiful Islam .

Dr Rakib was rushed to a private Gazi Medical College and Hospital first and later he was shifted to Sheikh Abu Naser Hospital (SSANSH) where he was placed into Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as his condition was worsened .

The attending doctors also referred him to Dhaka for better treatment as his condition further deteriorated, in Khulna. he added.

Dr Bidhan Chandra Goshwami, Director of SSANSH said that he died of profusion of bleeding on his head , caused by head injury while he was taking to Dhaka by an ambulance at around 7 pm .

On June 14, Sheuly Begum, an expecting mother was admitted to his clinic and operated upon by the doctor Khan died in an ambulance near Rupsa Bridge after few hours of the delivery on way to Dhaka for better treatment as her condition was deteriorating, Police and hospital sources said.

A day after the death of the patient , the relatives of the dead patient phoned the doctor for another caesarean operation and the attackers swopped on him at his clinic chamber , said Saiful .

“ The new born baby of the female patient is now well” , Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khulna Sadar Police Station Aslam Bahar Bulbul told BSS adding that one person, identified as Rahim was rounded up following a case filed by the victim’s younger brother Saidul and further investigation to the incident is on .

Bangladesh Medical Association Khulna unit held a protest rally this afternoon with its President Dr Sheikh Baharul Islam in the chair .

Held at Saheed Dr Milon Chattar , RDA avenue the participants in the rally demanded immediate arrest of the persons responsible for the incident .

BMA will also announce further agitation programme through a press conference tomorrow.
