58,936 tonnes of Aush rice likely to be produced in Khulna region

KHULNA, June 15, 2020 (BSS) – Above 58,936 tonnes of Aush rice is expected to be produced from 26,690 hectares of land in Khulna agriculture region during the current season.

Official sources in the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said the transplantation activities have created job opportunities for many of the idle people in the region amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Target has been set to produce 58,936 tonnes of rice from 26,690 hectares of lands. Of the lands, at least 5,288 tonnes of rice to be produced from 3,600 hectares of land in Khulna, 15,443 tonnes of rice from 5,790 hectares of land in Bagerhat, 8,000 tonnes of rice from 23,010 hectares of land in Satkhira and 9,300 tonnes of rice from 15,195 hectares of land in Narail districts under Khulna Agricultural Zone.

Additional Director of DAE in the region Kazi Abdul Mannan said the agricultural incentives will help for boosting

the aush paddy production as the country’s total production will be enhanced. The government has attached highest priority to the agriculture sector to cope with the present pandemic situation, he said.

“The aush farming is very much cost effective as it requires less production cost and faces less natural calamity,” he said, adding that till today, around 78 percent or 20,685 hectares of land aush rice has been cultivated of the total target during this current season.

On the other hand, some new paddy varieties released by Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) have opened up a door of enormous prospects of boosting aush rice through mitigating the crises of irrigation water in the region.

To maintain sound soil health, it could be advisable to grow rice using a different system in order to improve compatibility between monsoon rice and upland winter crops.##
