Fisheries and livestock sector gets Taka 661 more than last fiscal

DHAKA, Jun 11, 2020 (BSS) – With giving maximum emphasis on research activities, the government has proposed Taka 3,193 crore for fisheries and livestock sector aiming to meet the challenge of nutrient deficiency for its increasing population.

“Bangladesh has achieved self-sufficiency in fish and meat production, and efforts are continuing towards attaining similar achievement in egg and milk production,” said Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal while presenting the proposed budget of 2020-21 in the parliament today.

The Minister said effective steps will be taken in the next fiscal year to continue research activities to innovate new variety of fresh water fish and effective measures will be taken to develop new technologies for sea fishing.

In the revised budget of 2019-20, the total allocation for the livestock sector was only Taka 2.531 crore while it has been proposed to increase by Taka 661crore in the next 2020-21 fiscal year.

Referring to the ongoing corona virus pandemic, the finance minister in his budget speech said “Our success in fish production has received global recognition. However, in recent times due to prolonged lockdowns in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, a formidable challenge has emerged in marketing fishery products”.

The government continues to provide necessary support to tackle the challenge. Besides, the government will implement necessary special initiatives so that the fisheries sector can regain its pre-coronavirus position.

Regarding the development of the livestock sector, the finance minster said Bangladesh has made an unprecedented progress in its livestock sector, especially in rearing cattle, goats, geese and chicken in recent times.

However, due to prolonged lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak, there have been enormous difficulties in the poultry and dairy sector, especially in the marketing for eggs and milk products, and the government has taken necessary steps, and is continuing to provide required assistance to help the sector overcome those difficulties.

To ensure proper growth of the livestock sector, development of three livestock related technologies and transfer of these three technologies will be made, and activities to implement research projects will be completed in the next fiscal year.

In addition, we also have action plans to produce semen for developing new variety of bovine animals, expand artificial insemination, extend dole (airtight storage) system for the preservation of fodder, and provide capacity building trainings.
