Govt to patronise private sector in tapping marine fish resources: Kamal

DHAKA, June 11, 2020 (BSS) – Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal today said the government will patronise the private sector in extracting the untapped deep sea fish resources.

“Fishermen in Bangladesh have long been fishing in the shallow waters of the sea. But catching fishes in the deep sea could not be started,” he said while placing the budget for fiscal 2020-21 in parliament here today.

The finance minister said Bangladesh has a huge potential of untapped fish resources, including tunas, in the deep sea and the government has taken a project to procure ships suitable for extraction of fish resources from the deep sea.

He assured that the government would patronise the capacity building in the private sector in tapping the deep sea fish resources.

The government is implementing special measures to tap the immense potential of marine fisheries extraction in Bangladesh and use it for the development of the country, Kamal said.

Further, he said, acts and rules have been framed by the government to ensure proper use and monitoring of the extraction of marine fisheries resources.

The ‘Marine Fisheries Bill-2020’ has already been placed before the National Parliament for enactment, the finance minister added.
