Govt proposes Tk 1,246 crore for environment ministry

DHAKA, June 11, 2020 (BSS) – The government has allocated Tk 1,246 crore for the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in the proposed budget for fiscal 2020-21, which was Tk 1,076 crore in the revised budget of fiscal 2019-20.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal proposed the allocation while placing the budget for fiscal 2020-21 in the Parliament here today.

In his budget speech, Kamal said a motion titled ‘Planetary Emergency’ has been adopted in Parliament laying emphasis on the adverse impact of environmental degradation around the globe and climate change.

“We are addressing issues, such as environmental protection, pollution control, protection of biodiversity and combatting the adverse effects of climate change, by implementing the National Environment Policy, 2018,” he said.

The policy has specified the activities of various ministries or divisions and departments, he said.

The finance minister mentioned that a study titled ‘Assessment of Sea Level Rise and Vulnerability in the Coastal Zone of Bangladesh Through Trend Analysis’ has been conducted to assess the risks of sea level rise in the coastal areas in Bangladesh.

Efforts to reduce air pollution continue through the implementation of the Brick Making and Kiln Installation (Control) Act, 2019, he said.

It is mentionable that Tk 1,495 was proposed for the ministry in the fiscal 2019-20.
