Ensuring safe food practice stressed amid COVID-19 pandemic

RANGPUR, June 11, 2020 (BSS) – Health experts at a workshop here have stressed the need for enhancing public awareness of abiding by the health directives and ensuring safe food practice to remain protected amid coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

They viewed this at the divisional level workshop on ‘Increase awareness on occupational and environmental health through safe food practice’ held at the conference room of the Civil Surgeon at Sadar Hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

With the support of Dhrubo Advertising, the Lifestyle and Health Education and Promotion, Bureau of Health Education of the Directorate General of Health Services under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare organised the event.

The divisional and district level officials of the Departments of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Fisheries (DoF) and Livestock Services (DLS), primary and secondary education and physicians, sanitary inspectors and journalists participated in the workshop.

Presided over by Divisional Director (Health) Dr. Amin Ahmed Khan, its Deputy Director Dr. Sultan Ahmed delivered the keynote essay in the workshop on behalf of Dhrubo Advertisement as resource person.

Divisional Assistant Director (Health) Dr. ZA Siddiqui delivered a welcome speech narrating objectives of the workshop moderated by Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr. Kaniz Sabiha.

Dr. Sultan discussed the present situation of the safe food and health environment in the country, risks of taking adulterated and unsafe food, reasons behind food poisoning and ways of ensuring safe food chain systems, especially under the COVID-19 pandemic circumstances.

Divisional Director (Joint Secretary) of the Department of Family Planning Md. Mahbub Alam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and ICT) Shukria Pervin, Civil Surgeon Dr. Herambo Kumar Roy, Chief Medical Officer of Rangpur City Corporation Dr. Kamruzzaman Ibne Taz and journalists participated in the open discussion.

The speakers put importance on ensuring safe food chain systems at all stages beginning from the crop cultivation, harvesting, storing and processing, marketing and consumption at the households round the year and especially under the present situation.

Putting emphasis on maintaining physical distance, wearing masks and abiding by the health directives, Mahbub Alam said consumption of safe and nutritious foods is very crucial to enhance immunity of the human body to remain safe from COVID-19.

Dr. Khan urged the participants to work sincerely from their respective positions to enhance awareness among the people and younger generations on safe food practice and abiding by the health directives under the present COVID-19 pandemic situation.
