29 medicine shops fined TK 10.93 lakh in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM, June 7, 2020 (BSS) – Four separate mobile courts of district administration on Sunday noon fined 29 pharmacies Taka 10.93 lakh for selling unauthorized and date expired medicine.

The mobile courts imposed the monetary penalty on the owners of 29 pharmacies at Hazari Lane, the largest wholesale market for drugs in Chattogram.

The four-hour long drive, which began at 11 am on Sunday was led by four Executive magistrates Omar Farooq, Ghalib Chowdhury Shirin Akhter and SM Alamgir in cooperation with officials from the Drug Administration, RAB and Chattogram Metropolitan Police.

During the drive, the court realized Taka 10.93 lakh as fine from the owner of 29 Pharmacies in the area for selling drugs at exorbitant prices capitalizing on the current coronavirus situation, selling physician’s samples, date expired medicines and sale of counterfeit and unauthorized drugs.

Dr Badiul Alam, additional deputy magistrate of Chattogram district administration said such surveillance operation would be carried out in all pharmacies in Chattogram through mobile courts under the direction of Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ilias Hossain.

Assistant Director of the Department of Drug Administration Hossain Mohammad Imran told BSS that there is no shortage of medicines in Chattogram.

We are working to ensure adequate supply of medicines in all areas.
‘Even though, some pharmacies are strategically taking higher prices from the customers.

“If any pharmacy owner wants a higher price for a drug, I request you to file a complaint with the Department of Drug Administration with proof. We will take immediate action,” he added.

In response to complaints from buyers, the district administration took steps to conduct a crackdown on Hazari Lane, the largest drug market in Chattogram, led by four executive magistrates, Imran said.
