Enhancing fish production stressed ensuring environmental protection

RANGPUR, June 7, 2020 (BSS) – Experts at a training workshop today stressed on enhancing fish production ensuring environmental and social protection to meet protein demand of the people in the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

They expressed the view in the event on ‘Environmental and social protection in the pisciculture sector’ organised by the Upazila Fisheries Office at Pirgachha Mohila College hall room in Pirgachha upazila town of the district.

Thirty small and marginal fish farmers from 18 Cooperative Samities of common interest groups (CIGs) of nine unions across the upazila participated in the event arranged under the National Agricultural Technology Programme (NATP)-2 Project.

The event was arranged strictly maintaining physical distance to prevent community transmission of COVID-19 infection under the present situation.

Pirgachha Upazila Fisheries Officer Md. Aminul Islam attended the event as the resource person with its Field Assistant Md. Zahidul Bari in the chair.

The Upazila Fisheries Officer explained the necessity of enhancing fish cultivation by the farmers in rural areas to increase fish production maintaining physical, environmental and social safety measures.

He suggested the fish farmers to meet their nourishment to increase disease and virus resistant capacity by consuming fish along with selling their produced fish through their CIG cooperative societies to earn more profits.

“We have to maintain environmental and social protection while fish farming in water bodies to enhance fish production and consume the same to strengthen body immunity to remain safe in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.
