3740 hectares of land brought under jute cultivation in Narsingdi

NARSINGDI, June 5, 2020 (BSS) – A total of 3,740 hectares of land has been brought under jute cultivation in all six upazilas of the district during the current season.

Of the total, 440 hectares of land were brought under jute cultivation in Sadar upazila, 160 hectares in Polash upazila, 510 hectares in Shipper upazila, 620 hectares in Belabo upazila, 690 hectares in Monohardi upazila and 1320 hectres of land were brought under the cultivation in Raipura upzila during the season.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said cultivation of jute is increasing every year in the district as growers are getting fair price of their products.

Farmer Abul Hasam of Belabo upazila, Abdul Maruaf of Rapipura upazila and Niranjan Roy of Monohardi upazila expresses their satisfaction and said “We are interested in cultivating jute as it gives us cash money during the lean period. Sticks of jute are also used for different household purposes.”

Most of the farmers are showing interest cultivating Tosha variety of jute in their lands as its demand and price is high in the local markets than other varieties of jute, they added.

Deputy Director of DAE Shovan Kumar Dhar said the jute cultivators are interested in jute cultivation as they get good price of their products and they are getting all kinds of support from the government including quality seeds and fertilizers.
