BGB gets 4 speedy ultramodern interceptor vessels

DHAKA, June 3, 2020 (BSS) – As part of government pledge to modernize the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), four armed ultramodern speedy interceptor water vessels was added to the border watchdog with a capacity of identifying illegal water vessels even from the distance of 50 kilometers away from its position.

“With the instruction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina…the interceptor watercrafts have been provided to the BGB,” said a BGB release here today. These vessels have a capacity of 33 soldiers on board, a 40feet long three engine powered silver craft 40 model reinforced polymer water vessel can move with a speed of 55 nautical miles or 101 kilometers in an hour. Even the water craft has a facility to carry on two critical patients to nearest medical centre.

These disaster-resistant modern water vessels, having options of satellite navigation system (RADAR), fourth generation GPS, modern SON AR systems and equipped with automatic machine gun.

Under the phenomenon of rising different border related crimes including human trafficking, smuggling and drug or yaba trafficking, Bangladesh is now facing tremendous challenges in maintaining effective control throughout its 4,184 kms land and 180 kms maritime borders with India, 63 kms maritime border with Myanmar.

On the other hand, the water territory between Bangladesh and India locating at the deep mangrove forest of Sundarbans at Nildumur under the Southwestern region of Satkhira also has been identified as the challenging area of the country.

“These modern water convoys will help to diffuse all the illegal activities in the frontline areas of the country and protect the river routes in the frontier areas of the country,” said the release.
