1,011 poor families get cash assistance in Rangpur

RANGPUR, June 2, 2020 (BSS) – A total of 1,011 extremely poor families of Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) area, Mithapukur and Pirganj upazilas here received Taka 34.85 lakh as cash assistance amid coronavirus (COVIDF-19) pandemic.

“Rangpur Area Programme Cluster (APC) of World Vision Bangladesh (WVB) digitally transferred the money to mobile banking accounts of the families from bKash booths on Sunday and Monday to assist them in tackling the situation,” a press release said today.

The beneficiaries went to the nearby bKash booths to draw the transferred money to their mobile banking accounts maintaining physical distance and abiding by the health directives to prevent community transmission of COVID-19 infection.

Under the programme, the WBV provided Taka 5,000 to each of the 226 beneficiary families of different slums in RpCC and Taka 3,000 to each of the 400 families of Mithapukur upazila and 385 families of Pirganj upazila in the district.

After receiving Taka 5,000 in cash, beggar Alam Hossain, 38, of Paschim Jummapara area in Rangpur city the money would largely assist his family consisting of five members under the present situation.

Poor housewife Shilpi Begum, 37, of Honumantola area in Rangpur city said her family with five members is hardly living as her rickshaw-puller husband can not carry passengers to earn livelihood amid COVID-19 situation.

“I received Taka 5,000 from the WVB and it will help my family to overcome the present situation,” Shilpi added.

Similarly, jobless Ranjit Chandra Dash of Krishnapur village and Tripti Rani of Noyapara village in Mithapukur Upazila, Suruj Tara Akhter of Sandalpur village and Bilkis Khatun of village Patgram in Pirganj upazila received Taka 3,000 each.

The beneficiaries said that the cash assistance of WVB would help them a lot in buying food and other essential commodities for their family members and thanked the authorities of World Vision Bangladesh for helping them at this crisis moment.

Talking to BSS today, Rangpur APC Manager of WVB Stphan Haldar Ruven said the money transferred to the mobile banking accounts of the poor families would assist them in tackling the present situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
