Cyclone ‘Amphan’ causes Tk 10cr loss in electricity sector

KHULNA, May 23, 2020 (BSS) – The West Zone Power Distribution Company
Limited (WZPDCL) has primarily estimated that cyclone ‘Amphan’ caused a loss
of Taka 10 crore in power sector at 21 districts of Khulna and Barisal
divisions as well as partial of Dhaka division.

“We have primarily received an estimation of Taka 10 crore loss caused by
the extremely cyclonic storm ‘Amphan’ that made landfall in the coastal
districts on Wednesday evening,” said Managing Director of WZPDCL Engineer
Md. Shafiq Uddin.

At least 40,000 customers of WZPDCL have lost their electricity supply
after ‘Amphan’ lashed out at the coastlines of the country, he said, adding
that a lot of electricity lines, cables, transformers and electric polls has
been totally damaged in different coastal upazilas.

The power connection and line repairing works started on Thursday, he said.

A total of 581 electric polls were broken, 1,776 have been tilted and
various electricity equipments including 490 kilometers conductors has been
disconnected in 21 districts, he said, adding that 114 distribution
transformers, 996 piece of 11/33 kv over line insulitors have been damaged,
2,306 poll fitting set have been out of whack during ravage of ‘Amphan.’
