Khulna div admin stands by cyclone-hit people

KHULNA, May 22, 2020(BSS) – Khulna district administration has taken prompt
measures for reconstruction of damaged houses and distribution of cash
assistance and relief materials among the people affected by the cyclone
‘Amphan’ that made landfall in the coastal districts on Wednesday evening.

“The work on assessment of overall damages of houses, embankments and roads
caused by the cyclone as well as distribution of relief materials and safe
drinking water and repairing damaged electricity supply lines in the affected
areas, including different upazilas of Khulna and Satkhira districts, started
from morning,” said Khulna Divisional Commissioner Dr. Muhammad Anwar Hossain
Howlader.

He assured the people of government assistance while visiting different
costal upazilas including Dakop and Batiaghata yesterday afternoon and
distributed relief materials, including corrugated iron sheets, dry food,
pure drinking water and cash aid as part of the government’s instant efforts
to mitigate the ‘Amphan’ affected people’s sufferings.

“The severe Cyclonic storm ‘Amphan’ totally damaged 36,000 homesteads and
partially damaged 42,000 homesteads in the low-lying coastal areas,” said
Khulna Deputy Commissioner (DC) Helal Hossain, adding that least 5 lakh
people of 68 unions under nine upazilas of Khulna have been affected.

The Khulna district administration has been monitoring and reviewing the
situation round the clock and giving necessary instructions to mitigate
sufferings of the cyclone-hit people, he said.

Among others, by Whip of Jatiya Sangsad and Lawmaker of Khulna-1
constituency Panchanan Biswas, Batiaghata Upazila Chairman Md Ashraful Alam
Khan, Dakop Upazila Parishad Chairman Mansur Ali Khan, Additional Deputy
Commissioner (General) Ziaur Rahman, Upazila Nirbahi Officers and Water
Development Board officials were present during the relief distribution.

Meanwhile, the Army, Navy and Air Force have undertaken relief, rescue and
medical assistance programmes in the aftermath of super cyclone Amphan which
lashed the coastal districts late Wednesday afternoon with strong wind and
heavy rains.

In addition to their role in preventing coronavirus infections, the patrol
teams and units of the forces are in constant contact with the civil
administration to provide assistance in case of need and are ready to provide
necessary assistance, said an Inter Service Public Relation (ISPR)
Directorate media release.
