Momen for campaigning against RMG order cancellation from Bangladesh

Dhaka, May 22, 2020 (BSS) – Foreign Minister Dr A K Abdul Momen has urged Bangladeshi expatriates residing abroad for creating a public opinion there against unfair cancellation of ready-made garments orders from Bangladesh by the western brands and retailers amid COVID-19 pandemic.

He made the call to the expatriates especially those are residing in different countries in Europe and North America as the RMG sector, the major foreign currency earner of Bangladesh has been facing dire consequences in the wake of pandemic that pushed the global economy towards its worst downturn since the Great Depression.

Dr Momen was holding a video conference with expatriate Bangladeshis residing in different cities of Ireland on Thursday, a foreign ministry press release said here today.

The foreign minister expressed gratitude to the expatriate Bangladesh community for their support during the crisis of COVID19 and sought their further support in sensitising the foreign societies about the unfair action by the retailer brands.

Momen assured the Bangladesh community in Ireland that the foreign ministry is working on setting up Bangladesh High Commission in Dublin.

He said the present government has increased the number of Bangladesh Missions abroad from 57 to 78 while it has the plan to establish 100 Bangladesh Missions abroad.

The foreign minister also described different foreign ministry initiatives for providing better services to expatriate Bangladeshis, including setting up 24-hour helpline facilities in all Bangladesh missions abroad as well as introducing the Dutabash app.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to UK and concurrently accredited to Ireland Saida Muna Tasneem also participated in the video conference.
