4,000 cyclone centres ready in Ctg as storm Amphan intensifies

CHATTOGRAM, May 19, 2020 (BSS)- Nearly 4,000 cyclone centres were prepared
in different coastal upazilas of the district to give shelter to the people
evacuated from different risky areas of the coastal belt due to cyclone
Amphan.

Earlier, Chattogram district administration has directed Upazila Nirbahi
Officers (UNO) to set up 3,998 centre to give shelter to the vulnerable
people.

District administration sources said people from coastal areas including,
Banshkhali, Anwara, Patenga, Sitakunda and Sandwip, will be provided shelter
at the centres maintaining social distancing to prevent the transmission of
coronavirus.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ilias Hossain told BSS that a total of 489
cyclone centres of district Disaster Management Committee, 2,269 primary
schools buildings and 1,250 secondary school buildings have been prepared as
cyclone centres.

In addition to the 6,060 Cyclone Preparedness Program (CPP) volunteers,
6,000 Red Crescent volunteers, sufficient BNCC and Scout volunteers have been
deployed in the coastal areas.

The Department of Agricultural Extension has been instructed to take
precautionary measures so that the crops in the field are not damaged.

Moreover, announcement through the laud speakers is being carried out from
the morning to make people aware of the danger of the cyclone.

Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Kattli Circle Touhidul Islam said, “We
have started working to evacuate people from the risky areas by involving
local representatives of different volunteer organisations.”

Kamal Hossain, additional deputy commissioner (General), told BSS that
they are in constant touch with local representatives, service agencies, law
enforcement agencies, armed forces and all parties to deal with the cyclone.
A control room has also been set up by the district administration.

Metrological department predicted that five to ten feet high storm surge
may hit the low-lying areas of the country’s coastal belt under the influence
of super cyclone ‘Amphan’, which is likely hit the country in the early hours
of tomorrow.
