Govt imposes 65-day marine fish catch embargo from tomorrow

DHAKA, May 19, 2020 (BSS)- In an effort to make scientific sustainable
conservation of the marine fisheries, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock
imposed ban on catching all kinds of marine fishes and crustaceans like
crabs, lobsters, crayfish, shrimp, krill and barnacles till July 23 from
tomorrow at the maritime economic zone of the country.

“We want to strictly implement the government decision of stopping illegal
catching of marine fishes and with a view to ensure balanced breeding and
increasing production of the marine fish species”, said Fisheries and
Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim in an online meeting with various
concerned agencies while issuing the government instruction on this issue
here today.

To make the marine fish ban drive effective, the ministry has sent this
instructions to various government agencies including Navy headquarters,
Public Security Division under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Shipping
Ministry, Armed Forces Division, Police Headquarters, Coast Guard, RAB
headquarters, Department of Fisheries, Marine Police, Divisional
Commissioners of Barishal, Khulna and Chattogram, Deputy Commissioners of 14
coastal districts and the concerned division, district and upazila fisheries
department.

Besides this, the minister has also sought cooperation from the local
people including local administration, navy, police, coast guard , RAB and
marine police to this end.

The government imposed the ban under the Marine Fisheries Regulations of
1983,the ministry release added.

As part of the programme, the government has allocated about 23.500 tonnes
VGF rice for 4,19,589 registered fishermen families during the period.
