President mourns death of ex-MP Prof Adv Momtaz Begum

DHAKA, May 17, 2020 (BSS) – President M Abdul Hamid today expressed
profound shock and sorrow at the death of former Awami League (AL)
lawmaker Professor Advocate Mamtaz Begum, an organiser of the
Liberation War and also chairman of Jatiya Mohila Sangstha.

In a condolence message, the President recalled with profound
respect the outstanding contributions of Mamtaz Begum, ex-general
secretary of Bangladesh Mohila Awami League and also a former student
leader, to the country’s great Liberation War.

The head of the state prayed for eternal peace of her departed soul
and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Wife of AL Advisory Council member and Chairman of Bar Council
Executive Committee Advocate Syed Rezaur Rahman, Prof Mamtaz breathed
her last at her capital’s Dhanmondi residence in the early hours of
today. She was 74.

Mamtaz, also a freedom fighter and Begum Rokeya Padak winner, had
been suffering from various physical ailments for a long time.

He participated in the Language Movement and the six-point movement
and played an important role in the preparations for the Great War of
liberation, including the 1969 Mass uprising.
