1.04cr people getting govt relief in Rangpur division

RANGPUR, May 17, 2020 (BSS) – Around 1.04 crore people of over 23 lakh jobless families of all eight districts in Rangpur division are getting special relief assistance from the government in the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Senior officials said the government has so far allocated 17,916 tonnes of rice and Taka 10.84 crore as special relief for the jobless, distressed and needy people of the division to help them in tackling the situation.

Distribution of 15,203 tonnes of rice among 63.91 lakh people of 14.20 lakh jobless families with 10-kg rice each and Taka 9.11 crore among 40 lakh people of 8.89 lakh families already completed as a gift from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the division.

“Currently, the eight district administrations have 2,713 tonnes of rice and Taka 1.73 crore in stocks,” Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) Md. Zakir Hossain told the national news agency.

The administrations with assistance of local public representatives are managing the whole process maintaining physical distancing under strict monitoring systems to face the situation and prevent community transmission of COVID-19 infection.

“The government is frequently allocating rice and money to bring all of the jobless and needy people under the special social safety-net programme during the current coronavirus situation in the division,” Hossain added.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer (DRRO) of Rangpur ATM Akhteruzzaman said distribution of 3,564 tonnes of rice among 2.16 lakh families and Taka 1.60 crore among the needy families completed in the district by Saturday.

“We have a stock of 464 tonnes of rice and Taka 24.38 lakh,” he said, hoping that more allocation of rice and cash money will come soon for continuation of reaching foodstuffs to the doorsteps of every needy family.

Kurigram DRRO Dilip Kumar Saha said distribution of 1,832 tonnes of rice among 1.83 lakh jobless and needy families and over Taka 1.19 crore among 39,271 families and Taka 27 lakh among 8,438 families for baby foods completed in the district.

“Besides, we have a stock of 468 tonnes of rice and Taka 36.50 lakh now,” Saha added.

Similarly, 2.70-lakh needy families received 2,312 tonnes of rice and 2.76 lakh families got Taka 1.37 crore in Dinajpur and 1.81 lakh families got 1,312 tonnes of rice among and 1.81 lakh families got Taka 74.95 lakh in Thakurgaon districts.

Some 1.50 lakh jobless and needy families already got 1,499 tonnes of rice and 10,000 families received Taka 91.76 lakh in Lalmonirhat and 1.68 lakh families got 1,683 tonnes of rice and 1.68 lakh families Taka 1.12 crore in Gaibandha districts.

Besides, 1.27 lakh families received 1,234 tonnes of rice and 1.23 lakh families got Taka 88.94 lakh in Nilphamari and 1.22 lakh families got 1,766 tonnes of rice and 89,748 families got Taka 1.25 crore in Panchagarh districts.

Like many other local public representatives, Chairman of Chandanpat union in Rangpur Sadar upazila Amenur Rahman told BSS that he already distributed 19 tonnes of government rice among 1,900 jobless families with 10-kg each so far.
