President mourns death of National Professor Anisuzzaman

DHAKA, May 14, 2020 (BSS) – President M Abdul Hamid today expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of National Professor Dr Anisuzzaman, an eminent educationist, writer and professor emeritus of Bangla Department at Dhaka University.

In a condolence message, the President said, “Prof Dr Anisuzzaman was a shining star of Bengali literature and culture . . . He has played a very significant role in improving the quality of education in Bangladesh.”

The head of the state added: “His death is truly an irreparable loss to Bangladesh.”

Prof Anissuzzaman breathed his last around 4:55pm at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka after suffering from various health complications. He was 83.

Earlier, he was admitted to the Universal Cardiac Hospital in the city on April 27 with various health complications. Later he was taken to Dhaka CMH as his health condition worsened.

President Hamid prayed for eternal peace of his departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Prof Anisuzaman participated in the 1952 Language Movement, the 1969 Mass Upsurge and the 1971 Liberation War. After Independence, he became a member of the Kudrat-E-Khuda National Education Commission.

He was a member of the Planning Commission to the Government of Bangladesh during the Liberation War and the president of the Bangla Academy afterwards.

A fellow of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, Anisuzzaman was made a National Professor in 2018.

The national professor had been a recipient of the Bangla Academy award for research (1970) and the Ekushe Padak, an award given by the State, for his contribution to education (1983). The Rabindra Bharati conferred on him an honorary D. Lit (2005) and the University of Calcutta the Sarojini Basu Medal (2008).
