DHAKA, May 13, 2020 (BSS) – Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi today said e-
commerce sector will create around 5 lakh jobs in next year if the country’s
economic growth continues.

“People have become dependent on e-commerce for essential commodities and
e-commerce companies are working tirelessly to provide services. If all goes
well, in the next one year, e-commerce, marketplace, logistics and all other
services will create about 5 lakh jobs in this sector,” he said.

The minister said this while speaking as the chief guest at an online press
conference on overall situation of e-commerce and taking initiative for
providing essential commodities to the people by keeping trend of online
business during the coronavirus crisis.

Commerce Ministry and e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (e-CAB) jointly
organized the press conference.

Advisor of the e-CAB NahimRazzaq MP, Commerce Secretary Dr M Japar Uddin,
Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) President
Sheikh Fazle Fahim, Additional Secretary of the Commerce Ministry Md
ObaydulAzam and Director of the WTO Cell Md Hafizur Rahman delivered speeches
as special guests.

NahimRazzaq said the pace of online business will accelerate digital
payments and the wheel of the country’s future digital economy will become
more dynamic.

“Our goal will be easier if everyone, like the Ministry of Commerce and e-
Cab, is aware of what they have to do,” he added.

Jafar Uddin said Commerce Ministry has responded to e-cab calls since the
beginning of the COVID-19 crisis.

“To this end, the Commerce Ministry has given importance to the directives
of the Prime Minister’s Office on the one hand and has also given step-by-
step permission to the employees engaged in public and delivery services on
the condition of complying with the health rules for health safety,” he
added.

Sheikh Fazle Fahim said the potential of e-commerce has become as clear as
daylight in front of everyone.

“Now if we can further develop cross-border e-commerce, this sector will
play a huge role in the economy of the country. For those who still do
business in the conventional way, it is time to come to e-commerce. Many have
already started online businesses,” he added.
