3,000 more poor families get vegetables in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, May 12, 2020 (BSS) – Around 3,000 more jobless and low-income families were given vegetables as humanitarian assistance in the city today aimed at mitigating their hardship being caused by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

On the second consecutive day of its new venture of providing vegetables to the worst-affected households, Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has distributed 375 mounds of pumpkin and 60 mounds of spinach among the families at Shahmukhdum, Kasiadanga, Meherchandi and Bulanpur slum areas through four trucks.

On behalf of RCC Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, the families were given three kilograms of pumpkin and one kilogram of spinach each on an average.

Earlier on Monday, ten mounds of pumpkin and 50 mounds of spinach were distributed among 2,000 jobless and low-income families at Bhadra, Baharampur Railway and Shrirampur slum areas through four trucks.

RCC Chief Executive Officer Dr Sharif Uddin, Executive Engineer Nur Islam and some other officials concerned supervised the distribution activities. Sharif Uddin said the vegetable distribution will be continued until the crisis ends.

On the other hand, the city corporation has started extending support to 11,100 more jobless and other low-income families with foodstuffs as part of its relentless efforts in coping with the pandemic.

Each of the targeted families is being given 10 kilograms of rice, one kilogram of pulse, two kilograms of potato and one kilogram of pumpkin, said City Mayor Liton, who distributed 223 tonnes of rice, 41 tonnes of pulse and 52 tonnes of potato among 45,000 families in need with the assistance of the city’s affluent people earlier.

Besides, the city corporation has dispensed 513 tonnes of rice among 51,500 hand-to-mouth families from the government allocation.

“We are distributing the relief materials among the jobless people as part of the government’s instant humanitarian support to cope with the present troubled situation,” Mayor Liton said, adding the assistance will continue until the troubled situation is overcome.
