16,015 tonnes of rice being distributed in Rangpur division

RANGPUR, May 9, 2020 (BSS) – The government has so far allocated 16,015
tonnes of rice for distribution among the jobless and distressed people of
Rangpur division to assist them amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Officials said the district administrations with assistance of the local
public representatives are distributing the rice at the people’s doorsteps
strictly maintaining physical distancing to prevent COVID-19 situation spread.

Talking to BSS this afternoon, Additional Divisional Commissioner (General)
Md. Zakir Hossain said the distribution of 13,095 tonnes of rice has already
been completed among 12.48-lakh families.

“The eight district administrations of the division have currently 2,920
tonnes of rice in stocks to continue the special relief activities under the
present situation in the division,” he said.

Under the programme, distribution of 3,038 tonnes of rice among 1.99 lakh
families already completed in all eight upazilas, Rangpur city Corporation and
three municipalities of Rangpur the district.

Distribution of 1,483 tonnes of rice among 1.48 lakh families in Gaibandha
and 1,832 tonnes of rice among 1.83 lakh jobless families of Kurigram
districts also completed.

A total of 1,109 tonnes of rice among one lakh families of Nilphamari, 1,048
tonnes of rice among 1.004 lakh families of Lalmonirhat and 1,903 tonnes of
rice among 2.30 lakh families of Dinajpur districts were distributed so far.

In addition to this, distribution of 1,115 tonnes of rice among 1.65 lakh
families of Thakurgaon and 1,566 tonnes of rice among and 1.15 lakh families
in Panchagarh districts completed.

Besides, the district administrations also distributed Taka 7.70 crore among
1.60 lakh families of all eight districts in Rangpur division by Friday.

“The government is frequently allocating rice and money to bring all of the
jobless, distressed and needy people under the special social safety-net
programme to assist them in overcoming the coronavirus situation,” Hossain
added.
