CEC for tough action against irregularities in GCC polls

GAZIPUR, June 20, 2018 (BSS)- Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda today said tough action will be taken against those responsible for any irregularities in the upcoming Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls.

“The administration is making all out endeavors to hold the GCC polls peacefully and transparently…Tough action will be taken if the elections are not held in a free and fair manner,” he told a press conference at Gazipur district administration auditorium.

Earlier, Huda held a meeting with the concerned electoral officials on maintaining law and order in the GCC polls.

Election Commissioners Rafiqul Islam, Mahbub Talukder, Kabita Khanam, Brig Gen (retd) Shahdat Hossain Chowdhury and EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed attended the meeting.

GCC Polls Returning Officer Md Rakib Uddin, Deputy Commissioner Dr Dewan Mohammad Humayun Kabir, Superintendent of Police in Gazipur Md Harun-ur-Rashid and Gazipur District Election Officer Md Tarifuzzaman, among others, attended the meeting.

Gazipur City Corporation polls will be held on June 26 while the election campaign started on June 18.

CEC Huda said, “We hope that the election will be held peacefully and it will be acceptable and credible to all… Voters will be able to cast their votes freely to elect their chosen candidates.”

He also expressed his satisfaction over preparation for maintaining law and order during the GCC elections.

The CEC said, “We have discussed the role of the law enforcement agencies and the administration in the June 26 election.”

The CEC said there will be no deployment of army. Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) will be used at six voting centres, he added.

Rejecting the rigging allegation in the recently concluded Khulna City polls, the CEC said the administration never gives such opportunity.

About the BNP-backed mayor candidate’s allegation of violation of the electoral code, the CEC said the party (BNP) has to be specific on the issue.

Later, the CEC attended a view exchange meeting with mayoral and councilor candidates.
