13.86 lakh jobless families get relief in Rangpur division

RANGPUR, May 8, 2020 (BSS) – Over 13.86 lakh jobless, poor and distressed families have already received massive relief assistance from the government in Rangpur division to tackle the situation caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Officials in the divisional administration here said the district administrations already distributed 12,895 tonnes of rice among 12.31 lakh jobless and needy families and Taka 7.33 crore among 1.55 lakh distressed families by Thursday in the division.

Talking to BSS, Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) Md. Zakir Hossain said the government has so far allocated 14,965 tonnes of rice and Taka 8.62 crore as general relief for the jobless and needy people of all eight districts in Rangpur division.

“After distribution of 12,895 tonnes of rice and Taka 7.33 crore benefiting over 62.50 lakh people, the district administrations have 1,970 tonnes of rice and Taka 1.10 crore in stocks in the division ,” he said.

The district administrations with assistance of the local public representatives are distributing the rice and money inflexibly maintaining physical distancing under a strict monitoring system to tackle the situation and prevent COVID-19 situation spread.

“The government through the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief is frequently allocating rice and money to bring all needy people under the special social safety-net programme during the coronavirus situation,” Hossain added.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer (DRRO) of Rangpur ATM Akhteruzzaman said distribution of 3,038 tonnes of rice among 1.98 lakh families and over Taka 1.26 crore among needy families already completed in the district.

“We have a stock of 240 tonnes of rice and Taka 19.28 lakh,” he said, adding that distribution of rice with other foodstuffs and money continues in all eight upazilas, one city corporation and three municipalities of the district.

Talking to BSS, Kurigram DRRO Dilip Kumar Saha said distribution of 1,832 tonnes of rice among 1.83 lakh jobless families, Taka 1.12 crore among 39,271 families and Taka 27 lakh among 8,438 families for baby foods completed in the district.

“Besides, we have a stock of 18 tonnes of rice and Taka 3.50 lakh for distribution among the jobless, distressed and needy people of the district,” Saha added.

Similarly, 1.1.38 lakh families already got 1,380 tonnes of rice and 9,000 families Taka 88.25 lakh in Gaibandha and over one lakh families received 1,109 tonnes of rice and 4,021 families got Taka 81.44 lakh in Nilphamari districts

Over 1.04 lakh families received 1,048 tonnes of rice and 8,000 families received Taka 65.26 lakh in Lalmonirhat and 2.30 lakh needy families 1,903 tonnes of rice and 1,400 families got Taka one crore in Dinajpur districts.

Besides, over 1.61 lakh families got 1,115 tonnes of rice among and 10,000 families got Taka 63.13 lakh in Thakurgaon and over 1.14 lakh families got 1,466 tonnes of rice and 83,150 families got about Taka 1.02 crore in Panchagarh districts.
