One more UP chairman, 6 members suspended over relief scam

DHAKA, May 5, 2020 (BSS) – The Local Government, Rural Development and
Cooperatives Ministry has suspended one more Union Parishad (UP) chairman and
six members for irregularities in distribution of relief goods.

The Local Government Division (LGD) of the ministry today issued separate
notifications in this regard.

A total of 49 public representatives, including 18 UP chairmen, 29 UP
members, one Zila Parishad member and one municipality councilor, have so far
been suspended over the relief scam, said a press release.

The suspended chairman is Mujibur Rahman Hawlader of Shirkhara UP of Sadar
Upazila under Madaripur district.

The UP members are Rubel Iajaradar alias Babul member of ward-1 of
Perikhali UP of Rampal upazila under Bagerhat district, Md Sohrab Hossain
Bishwas, of ward-8 of Maizpara UP under Sadar Upazila of Narail district, Md
Selim Molla of ward-9 of Bilaspur UP under Jazira upazila of Shariatpur
district, Rezaul Karim Khan Sohag of ward-8 of Subidpur UP under Nalchhiti
upazila of Jhalkathi district, and Mujibur Rahman of ward-3 and Sahida Begum
Rupa of 1, 2 and 3 no reserved wards for women of Kalapur UP under Sreemangal
upazila of Moulvibazar district.

The notifications mentioned that they have been suspended for various
reasons, including, embezzlement of relief rice, staying abroad ignoring the
government directives and obstructing doctors to perform duties and
assaulting them.

Besides, separate showcase notices were served on them asking to send
their replies to the LGD through respective deputy commissioners (DCs) within
10 working days from the date of receiving notices, explaining why they
should not be removed permanently from their posts.
