Boro paddy harvesting nearing completion in Netrakona

NETRAKONA, May 5, 2020 (BSS) – Harvesting of Boro paddy is nearing
completion in the haor areas in six upazials of Netrakona district.

The six upazilas are Khaliajury, Mohanganj, Modan, Kalmakanda, Kendua and
Atpara.

About 95 percent of Boro paddy has, so far, been harvested by the farmers
in the haor areas.

Netrakona Deputy Commissioner (DC) Main-Ul-Islam told BSS here today that
farmers of the haor areas have already completed harvesting of Boro paddy on
38,950 hectors of land out of total 40,945 hectors under Boro cultivation in
the haor areas in the current season.

“It has been possible for the farmers to complete harvesting of 95 percent
of Boro paddy in the haor areas timely as the government provided 70 combined
harvesters and 25 paddy-ripper machines to expedite their harvesting process”
the DC informed.

Apart from this, the government made special arrangements for sending
15,000 paddy-cutting workers to the haor areas from northern districts of the
country for speedy harvesting of the Boro paddy, the DC said.

Prior to sending the workers, the government ensured their safety by
imparting training on the necessity to wear masks, use of hand sanitizer and
maintaining social distancing to prevent spread of pandemic coronavirus.

“Agriculture minister Dr. Abdur Razzaque accompanied by state minister for
social welfare Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru visited the haor areas of the district
and distributed soap, hand sanitizer, masks and lungies to the paddy-cutting
workers to ensure their safety”, he said.

“Over 2.45 lakh metric tonnes of Boro paddy have been harvested in the haor
areas till today and the harvesting of Boro paddy is expected to be completed
in the current week”, the DC added.
