58 lakh people get relief assistance in Rangpur division

RANGPUR, May 4, 2020 (BSS) – The government has already provided relief assistance to 58 lakh people of 12.86-lakh jobless, destitute and needy families of Rangpur division to assist them in the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Officials said the district administrations have already distributed 11,945 tonnes of rice among 11.42-lakh jobless and needy families and Taka 6.90 crore among 1.44-lakh distressed families in the division.

“The eight district administrations in the division have currently 1,970 tonnes of rice and Taka 1.10 crore in stocks,” Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) Md. Zakir Hossain told BSS today.

Meanwhile, the government has so far allocated 13,916 tonnes of rice and Taka eight crore as special general relief for the jobless and needy people of all eight districts in Rangpur division.

The district and upazila administrations with assistance of grassroots’ level public representatives are distributing the rice and money maintaining physical distancing under strict monitoring systems to tackle the COVID-19 situation in the division.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer (DRRO) of Rangpur ATM Akhteruzzaman said distribution of 2,711 tonnes of rice among 1.78-lakh families and Taka 1.15 crore among needy families completed in the district.

“We have a stock of 317 tonnes of rice and Taka 17.88-lakh,” he said, adding that the government is frequently allocating rice and money to bring all needy people under the special social safety-net programme during the coronavirus situation.

Kurigram DRRO Dilip Kumar Saha said distribution of 1,509 tonnes of rice among 1.51-lakh jobless and needy families, Taka 97-lakh among 31,896 families and Taka 15-lakh for baby foods completed in the district.

“Besides, we have a stock of 191 tonnes of rice and Taka 15-lakh for distribution among the needy people amid COVID-19 situation in the district,” he said.

Similarly, 2.30-lakh needy families already received 1,903 tonnes of rice and 1,400 families got Taka one crore in Dinajpur and 1.50-lakh families got 1,115 tonnes of rice among and 10,000 families got Taka 63.13-lakh in Thakurgaon districts.

Over 1.04-lakh jobless and needy families already got 1,049 tonnes of rice and 8,000 families received Taka 65.26-lakh in Lalmonirhat and 1.28-lakh families got 1,283 tonnes of rice and 8,000 families Taka 79.35-lakh in Gaibandha districts.

Besides, 90,900 families received 909 tonnes of rice and 3,553 families got Taka 67.57-lakh in Nilphamari and 1.08-lakh families got 1,466 tonnes of rice and 81,098 families got Taka 1.02 crore in Panchagarh districts.

Talking to BSS, Chairman of Chandanpat union parishad in Rangpur Sadar upazila Amenur Rahman said he already completed distribution of 19 tonnes of rice allocated by the government among 1,900 families of his union.

Chairman of Saddyapuskorini union parishad in Rangpur Sadar upazila Sohel Rana said he already distributed 14 tonnes of government rice among 1,400 families of his union and got allocation of five tonnes of more rice today.

Chairman of Haridebpur union parishad in Rangpur Sadar upazila Iqbal Hossain said he distributed 18 tonnes of government rice among the jobless and needy families and is waiting to get more allocations.
