Jamuna erosion makes homeless about 5o families in Manikganj

MANIKGANJ, Jun 20, 2018 (BSS) – The erosion of the Jamuna in three
unions of Daulatpur upazila makes about fifty families homeless in last two
weeks. More than one hundred acres of crop land also disappeared during these
periods.

The unions are Charkatari, Bachamara and Baghutia. The most affected
areas are Lalpur, Katari, Kathaltuli, Charkatari Mondolpara, Boardghar Bazar
and Charkatari Bazar of Charkatari union of Daulatpur upazila.

Educational institutions, mosques, madrasas, hatbazars, roads, domestic
houses, crop lands including Union Parishad office and land office of the
areas are now in danger. About fifty houses including Charkatari High School,
Charkateri Bazar, Government Primary School were partly been eroded.

Some people of the areas are shifting their houses, cattle sheds and
other transferable goods in their rented lands. Some people have taken
shelter at the house of their relatives. An elderly man of Charvaranga
village Samej Pramanik said they had shifted their house eight times in two
decades. He lost all of his 40 bighs of land and now a day labourer.

Alamgir Hossain of Charkatari Boardghar areas are now living in a
temporary shed in a rented land.

Abdul Latif, Chairman of Bachamara Union said Water Development Board
has taken a project of Tk. 3.5 crore for protection of the erosion of the
areas. But about thirty acres of land of his union have already been
disappeared.

Abdul Barek Mondol, Chairman, Charkatari union said more than fifty
houses including Charkatari Health and Family Welfare Center, two primary
schools and crop lands already been eroded of his union.

Tozammel Huque Toza, Upazila Chairman of Daulatpur said the people of
these areas are living in panic. The erosion affected people are moving from
here to there for new shelters.
