48,000 households get soaps to fight COVID-19 in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, April 28, 2020 (BSS) – Around 48,000 marginalized households were given 2.30 lakh soaps to make them capable to fight against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in Rajshahi city.

Livelihoods Improvement of Urban Poor Communities Project (LIUPCP) provided the hand-washing support. It has also provided its ninety staffers with personal protective gear to encourage them in serving marginalized community people amid coronavirus situations.

The project staff including 32 community facilitators, 25 socio economic nutrition volunteers and 11 community organizers got one apron, four hand sanitizers, one set gumboot, 30 masks and 50 hand gloves each.

Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has been implementing the LIUPCP with financial support of DFID, Government of Bangladesh and UNDP for improving the living and livelihood condition of around 48,000 slum and marginal households in Rajshahi city.

On behalf of the LIUPCP, 1,600 conservancy workers of RCC were given 3,200 soaps yesterday in order to make them habituated to hand washing to stem the virus spread.

RCC Chief Executive Officer Dr ABM Sharif Uddin, Executive Engineer and Member Secretary of the project Nur Islam Tusser, Chief Conservancy Officer Sheikh Mamun and Chief Community Development Officer Azizur Rahman were present at the distribution programme held at the city bhaban conference hall.

Nur Islam Tusser told the meeting that the all the project-covering marginalized population were brought under various motivational and awareness campaigns to fight COVID-19 outbreak.

The project staffs are disseminating ideas among the community people on how to use the protective gears effectively besides maintaining social and physical distancing.

Besides, the community people are also learning about how to wash hands and follow other health related guidelines to contain the spread of coronavirus.

They are disseminating the messages in all the communities explaining how the coronavirus spreads, how people can protect themselves and their families from its infection and how they can understand symptoms of the disease and seek healthcare.

As a whole, they are disseminating awareness messages on coronavirus among the community people so that they can protect themselves from the invisible enemy, Egineer Nur Islam Tusser added.
