Hasan urges BNP to shun politics of spreading malice, falsehood

DHAKA, April 27, 2020 (BSS) – Castigating BNP for making adverse remarks over the government’s nationwide activities to tackle the COVID-19 situation, Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today urged BNP to shun politics of spreading hate speeches and falsehood in the month of holy Ramadan.

“We saw BNP could not leave the politics of spreading hate speeches. The language that Rizvi Ahmed talked yesterday … I will request him to maintain restraint while speaking in the month of Ramadan,” he said.

Hasan, also Awami League’s joint general secretary, made the statement through a virtual briefing to the media from AL president’s Dhanmondi political office here in the afternoon.

The information minister said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken various initiatives, including announcement of stimulus packages amounting more than 3.5 percent of the total GDP, to protect the country’s people from the deadly virus, to provide food assistance to the poor and destitute people and keep the country’s economy vibrant amid the COVID-19 crisis.

And her initiatives were highly lauded around the world, Hasan said, adding that the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Economic Forum and US magazine Forbes also praised the steps taken by the Prime Minister to tackle coronavirus pandemic in Bangladesh.

But BNP could not come out of the politics of spreading malice and falsehood, he said, adding, “It is necessary that we should stand by the people altogether in the month of holy Ramadan, shunning the politics of spreading hate speeches and falsehood”.

The AL joint general secretary said the Awami League has already formed relief distribution committees at different levels and the committees are distributing relief among the poor and destitute people on behalf of the party.

The relief goods have already been reached to thousands of people across the country, he said, adding that the number of the people, who got relief, will be made public soon.

Hasan said the AL men have been asked to distribute relief in coordination with the local administrations so that all the poor and destitute people could be brought under relief coverage.

AL office secretary Biplab Barua, its health affairs secretary Dr Rokeya Sultana and deputy office secretary Sayeem Khan were, among others, present on the occasion.
