Workers can no way be retrenched: Sufian

DHAKA, April 25, 2020 (BSS)- State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian today categorically said workers can no way be retrenched from mills and factories during the Coronavirus situation.

“No factories can be laid-off and no workers can be retrenched from mills and factories during the corona situation,” she said.

The state minister told this while presiding over the 64th meeting of Tripartite Consultative Council (TCC) of government, employers and employees at the seminar room of Srama Bhaban in the capital.

Sufian urged the owners of different factories to pay salaries and bonus to the workers before the holy Eid. “The employers will have to go by health code as per the directives of the Prime Minister to keep the wheel the economy running,” she said.

For this, she said, necessary steps would be taken through the concerned departments like industrial police, inspection department and health department.

The state minister stressed on ensuring health protection of workers and said everyone should ensure the health protection of workers while opening the factories.

Additional secretary of the ministry Dr Rezaul Haque conducted the meeting while Department of Factory Inspection Inspector General Shibnath Ray, Directorate of Labour Director General AKM Mizanur Rahman and Jatiya Sramik League President Fazlul Haque Mantu were present at the meeting.

The other TCC members joined the meeting through the video conference.
