Coronavirus positive cases rise to 69 in Rangpur division

RANGPUR, April 24, 2020 (BSS) – The number of coronavirus (COVID-19) detected patients reached 69 in the division after seven more persons were found infected with the lethal virus on Thursday night.

“After testing 188 samples of suspected patients at the COVID-19 Laboratory of Rangpur Medical College (RMC) yesterday, seven of them were detected coronavirus positive,” said Chief of the Divisional Coronavirus Service and Prevention Task Force and Principal of RMC Professor Dr. AKM Nurunnabi Laizu.

The seven new infected patients include three women and four men of three northern districts in Rangpur division.

Among them, five infected people are from Rangpur district, including two female senior staff nurses and a female bank official of the city, one male patient each of Pirganj upazila and Mithapukur upazilas.

“The two senior staff nurses were infected with COVID-19 virus after coming in contact with people who did not disclose their information about infection,” Dr. Laizu added.

The other two newly infected coronavirus patients include one each of Boda upazila in Panchagarh and Roumari upazila of Kurigram districts.

“Most of the 69 detected COVID-19 patients of Rangpur division recently returned from Dhaka, Narayanganj and Gazipur and a few of them got infected after coming in contact with other infected patients,” he added.

Focal Person of COVID-19 and Assistant Director (Health) for Rangpur division Dr. ZA Siddiqui said the total number of detected COVID-19 infected patients rose to 69 in the division on Thursday.

“Among the detected COVID-19 patient, 15 are in Rangpur, three in Panchagarh, 10 in Nilphamari, two in Lalmonirhat, five in Kurigram, seven in Thakurgaon, 13 in Dinajpur and 14 in Gaibandha districts,” he said.
Of them, 33 are undergoing treatments at the isolation units of different government hospitals and 31 at their respective home and five were released after recovery.
Meanwhile, the total number of quarantined people rose to 22,059 in Rangpur division where 336 more people were put on home or institutional quarantine during the last 24 hours till 8 am today.

So far, 9,820 people were released from home or institutional quarantine since the outbreak began while 12,239 others are in quarantine till today in all eight districts of Rangpur division.

Besides, 514 suspected coronavirus patients were put on institutional quarantine at different hospitals in Rangpur division since the beginning, and of them, 312 released so far and 202 are undergoing treatments.

Divisional Director (Health) Dr. Md. Amin Ahmed Khan said 25 quarantine and isolation centres at different institutions and hospitals with a total capacity of 2,552 beds are currently providing treatments to COVID-19 patients in Rangpur division.

“Presently, we have 10 Quarantine Centres at different institutions with 1,260 beds at 15 Isolation Centres at different hospitals with 1,292 beds for providing treatments to COVID-19 positive patients,” he said.

Besides, 15 dedicated hospitals, including the Dedicated Corona Isolation Hospital in Rangpur, with the capacity of ICU 13 beds and 13 ventilators at two hospitals are providing treatments to COVID-19 patients to face the pandemic in the division.
