Country has buffer stocks of essential items: Tipu

DHAKA, April 23, 2020 (BSS) – Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi today said
there is no reason for shortage of any product as the country has a buffer
stock of essential items to meet the demand.

“The country has adequate stocks of all essential commodities, such as
rice, pulses, oil, onion, garlic and ginger. This amount is more than the
demand. The government will take stern action against any artificial product
crisis,” he said.

The minister was presiding over a review meeting on ‘production, stocks
and supply situation’ of the essential commodities during the COVID-19 crisis
and ahead of the holy Ramadan, said a press release.

Tipu said domestic manufacturers have produced more than the country’s
demand and the country has already imported adequate quantities of goods.

“In the current situation, special measures have been taken for smooth
transportation of goods and speedy discharge of imported goods. There is no
crisis of any product and there is no possibility or reason for price
spiral,” he added.

He said all concerned should work sincerely and responsibly for the
welfare of the people of the country.

“The taskforce and various committees have been formed to ensure supply
and fair price of all products. The Ministry of Commerce and the government
are providing all necessary assistance,” he added.

As per the instruction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Tipu said, the
ministry has taken extensive preparations marking the holy month of Ramadan.

“The Ministry of Commerce is selling soybean oil, lentils, sugar and dates
at affordable prices through truck sales in all divisions, districts,
upazilas and even at the union level of the country through the Trade
Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB),” he added.

He informed that TCB is selling more products this year than in any
previous year.

“About 3,000 dealers, hired by TCB, are selling products in trucks.
Already some irregularities have been detected in the sale of goods and
strict action has been taken against the accused as per the law,” he added.

At present, the commerce minister said, a total of 90 market monitoring
teams are conducting regular market monitoring activities across the country.

Among others, Commerce Secretary Dr Md Jafor Uddin was present on the
occasion.
