Govt takes programmes to tackle COVID-19 shock

DHAKA, April 22, 2020 (BSS) – The Department of Social Services under the Ministry of Social Welfare has undertaken various programmes to support the poor, helpless and jobless people of the country in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

The Department of Social Services under the guidance of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and directives from Social Welfare Minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed, State Minister Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru, Secretary Mohammad Jainul Bari and Director General of the Department Sheikh Rafiqul Islam, has been distributing food items among the poor, helpless, physically and mentally challenged people, street children and jobless workers with support from the Bangladesh National Social Welfare Council, said a press release.

The release said such operations will continue until the situation improves.

Under this programme, each family is receiving at least 5 kg rice, 2 kg potatoes, 1 kg pulse, 1 kg onion, 0.5 liter edible oil and a soap.

This operation has already been extended up to district and upazila level with support from the concerned officials and employees of the department of social services.

From March 27 to April 21, the Department of Social Services has provided food support to some 78,078 families across the country including 7,560 families in the capital.

The Department today distributed food materials among some 300 poor and low-income families at Hazaribagh, Rayerbazar and Boubazar areas under Dhaka South City Corporation under the supervision of Assistant Director of the Department M Firadul Haque, added the release.
